Central Academy Science Bowl Team Advances
The Central Academy Science Bowl team won the state/regional Science Bowl contest at Iowa State University on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010. The team advances to the National Science Bowl competition, April 29 – May 4, in Washington D.C. in an all-expense paid trip. This regional competition is sponsored by Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University.
Central Academy went undefeated (9-0) in the morning and afternoon rounds. They defeated Ames High School twice to win the competition. Ames placed second in the competition while Dubuque Hempstead placed third in the competition.
This is the second straight state/regional win for Central. They won the regional contest last year and advanced to the National competition where they tied for fifth in the country. They lost in the double elimination rounds to the teams that placed 1st and 2nd in the country. The Central Academy Science Bowl team has also placed 2nd in 2008, 2007, 2005, 2003, and 2000. They also placed 3rd in 2006 and 2004.
The members of the Central Academy team (and their home schools) are:
James Nassif, Roosevelt High School, 11th Grade
Joel Schneider, Roosevelt High School, 11th Grade
Kerrick Staley, Johnston High School, 12th Grade
Nick Swingle, Roosevelt High School, 12th Grade
Luchang Wang, Valley High School, 10th Grade
Coach is Jeff Hepburn, AP and IB Chemistry instructor at Central.
